Tonner's City Girls...

Postby magkelly » Fri Nov 09, 2012 4:35 pm

Well, they're up on the Tonner site as of today. Got an email. Free shipping if you order one today but I'm not going for it after all. I expected $30-40 from what they had said and more like 14" tall, MT size? They're $50 which is just too much in my mind for a fashion doll that's supposed to be entry level and for kids and they're much taller than the MT's besides. 15.75 inches? Wait a minute. I can get a full sized adult level Nu Mood basic doll for that. I love their looks, clothes et all, and I've been really waiting on these, but not until that price point drops a bit there. Adult high end prices for supposedly lower end dolls? Nope. Maybe a clothes pack eventually but not the dolls, not yet. That's just a bit high for what these dolls were supposed to be. They were supposed to be more playline than regular line and I don't call $50 a pop playline...

Correction $50 and up. The formal dolls are more....like $60....

I was looking forward to these girls as well, but that's too much indeed :-(

Eating my words, sort of. :P Tonner is running a 30% off Black Friday sale and there is no shipping besides if you use the coupon code they mention on the website. So the $50 Astor is now a sane $35 and I got a $24 outfit for like $17.50 I think it was. Oh, and I'm not actually paying for her my SIL is paying for my nieces. It's my Christmas present from them so actually I'm pretty happy about that. I got Astor and the turquoise outfit I liked wanted. The rest of the dolls and outfits I think they're cute too but she's the one I really wanted to buy and that's the only outfit that really grabbed me. It's rather Barbie Stardoll looking, that one.

I like her normal outfit too particularly the shoes which are basically the same as the silver ones that came with this set. I'm rather hoping some of the other shoes I have will fit her too, but there's no telling now with the size difference thing what she can actually wear so I will just have to see and at least now she has two pairs that I know will fit her. When they first announced these I thought she'd fit right into MT stuff and vice versa but maybe not. Since she's quite a bit taller than the MT's she might be bigger and have larger feet. I suspect she's more like Tyler sized only with a slimmer teen body, but I'll have to wait till she gets here to actually compare her with other dolls, I guess. This is Astor in the turquoise outfit. She's really cute isn't she?

I just found this. It's a body comparison for the girls. Looks to me like she's right between a 13" girl and a 16" in terms of body and shoe size. I'm glad I bought the extra outfit now. Looks like she's going to have smaller feet than a 16" girl but somewhat larger feet maybe than an MT. Could be the MT, Jem, and Elle shoes might fit her but I do have doubts on that score. Her feet look smaller than both Delilah's too so outfitting her with more shoes could be pretty tricky. Let's hope that Tonner decides to put out a shoe pack, yes? The one outfit with cape, it looks different from the Toy Fair version. I wanted that one but it now has black plastic boots instead of brown suede ones and looks a bit different underneath besides. I liked it better the original way...

Yeah, darn, she is considerably bigger than an MT and has bigger feet. Another comparison with an MT in the pic. No doubt about it. Jem shoes and that will be too small, but Tyler shoes will likely be too big. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59582287@N ... 1967662076

It was my understanding prior to release that these girls would run around $30 and the fashions around $15 so I was a bit put off to see the prices. I'll be curious to see if the clothes fit other dolls in the same size range.

That's pretty much what was indicated after the fair, yes. They were supposed to be more like 13" and $30-35 and the outfits for $15-20. Instead they're 15 3/4 inches and they're $50-60 and $25 for outfits. That definitely caused a bit of sticker shock scenario with me. I was really looking forward to Astor and waiting on her release but at those prices I just gave it up. I wanted Precarious Basic too but at $125 she's just priced too high for me even if she does come with 2 cool wigs. I almost ordered her just now but even with the discount she's $90 and I just can't go there right now.

The only reason I let them buy it for me was because of the Black Friday sale. No way I'd have gotten her otherwise at those prices. She's definitely a $25-30 doll from her looks. Her material which may be plastic not vinyl is definitely lighter, a lot more MT or Liv like than Tyler like. No ankle articulation, no foot articulation, she's definitely not a Tyler type doll. The outfits are nice but they're $15 outfits from my perspective. The only reason I bought her a second one is because I wasn't paying and because I really, really liked that turquoise one and wanted the extra shoes. I still almost balked at $17.50 but my aunt said not to worry about it just to get it if I really wanted it so I did. I still think she's overpriced a bit even with the sale, but at least that's something more like what she was supposed to cost.

I was disappointed to see the cape outfit changes. I liked that one and likely might have gotten it myself if it had looked like it did at Toy Fair. I actually liked the dress up Astor a lot. She looks to have better hair, but her dress just looks too much like the one on the Leigh MT for me. I may cut her hair into more of a chin length bob I think. I like the color but I'm not crazy about the length. I would have liked it a bit longer, but shorter will do I guess. In between is just not doing that much for her though. Looking at her I am wondering if she will fit into Ellowyne shoes albeit they'll be a bit too wide. If so she might also fit 2nd generation Delilah shoes and some others I have. Alex shoes are generally a bit shorter and thinner than Tonner Tyler or Gene shoes. They might work and I have this mystery set of brown sandals that fit a bit tight on them that might be perfect for her. I'm thinking the Elle boots and shoes I have might be a good match. They're a bit big on MT's but stay on. They're too small generally for Tonner/Gene dolls. Elle is essentially a 16" Barbie only with Barbie like feet. Gene and Tonner clothes fit her and vice versa but her feet were smaller and thinner and they look about the same to me as this City Girl's.

As many doll shoes as I have, there will have to be something else that will fit. I've only run across two dolls yet in the hundreds I own that don't fit any other doll's shoes. With my vast doll wardrobe it's near impossible that she won't have plenty of stuff to wear and if worst comes to worst, there's always the sewing machine and making some more shoes for her myself....

I feel you. I was sitting there waiting for them to go live on the site, debit card in hand and was so disappointed with the pricing that I walked away. I was thinking about buying an outfit on the offhand chance it would fit one of the other slim girls around here but they looked really super slender in the sales pics so I figured I'd hang back and see how they worked for other folks.
Of course now that I've seen the Black Friday sale I am so very tempted....ehehehehe.
I wonder if Ellowyne Wilde shoes would fit or if they'd be too big?

Looking at that second comparison pic I'd say Ello's shoes are almost the right length but maybe just a smidge too long and a bit too wide which is why I'm thinking more of those Elle/Alex shoes. But width isn't all that important for boots and such. She probably could wear those if not open sandals. I'll try on everything I think might fit when I get mine. Post here what worked and what didn't.

Actually we just canceled the order. The more pics I saw, the reviews I read, I'm just not too impressed. It really looks like there might be some QC control issues with the dolls in this line. There are several pics online with people complaining about the hair being choppy and the bangs being cut badly, griping about the low quality of the body. For the price it would seem like they're built rather cheaply, and yeah, while she is a play line doll I just don't think she's worth $35-50 if so. I'd just rather have something else, I think.

I'm not as impressed as I was at the beginning either... unfortunately. I really like Billy's outfit with those shoes <3 but I don't think I'm gonna do it.

I don't believe it. My aunt just called me. They just processed the order and shipped it anyway! I can't call the store because they won't answer the phone till Weds, store is closed till then, but the UPS tracking is just saying a label has been processed. I was trying to catch them before they actually shipped but I can't even get them on the phone to kill the order. FYI, we canceled that order not even 30 mins after it was made but they just conveniently missed the email and processed it anyway I guess. I'm either going to have to refuse shipment or ship it back now at my expense I guess. This just bites....

Update: We just talked to a woman at Tonner and she's going to try to head it off before it ships. She told me to refuse the package and or to keep it and she'd send a returns ticket so at least they're on top of it which I do appreciate. I also let her know what Ii saw about Astor and the hair/body issues so hopefully they'll address that.
