Here you have people who are references. You give their contact information to a potential employer and they will call that person to ask about you. I did ask the professer if he would be a reference for me and he said he would be thrilled to do so

Overe here we do that too but its usually a boss or something. But sometimes colleges too. They also look at linkedin and even facebook sometimes.
I know cause my husband has been without work for a long time now. These are bad times to be unemployed over here. Specially if your 40+ years of age which my hubby is.

That is just horrible. Honestly, the economy is just stupid.
My parents lost their jobs around two years ago. At least, they lost their normal minimum wage jobs.
If you are willing to do some things, it's very easy to find one. In my parents' case, they opened up their own restaurant.
We don't make nearly as much as we did before, and they have to work almost double the hours, but in the end, it's a job, and they're very happy being their own boss (and slacking off when there aren't any customers, lol!)

No. I applied to two jobs last week, but nothing on them yet. I haven't applied for unemployement - it almost doesn't seem worth it. It takes two weeks to activate, you have to apply for jobs at least four days a week AND according to the website all unemployment payments will stop effective December 29th unless the Federal Government does something about it.

Plus it doesnt' pay worth poop. I can make more money doing temp work.

In all seriousness, I have been in your (rather uncomfortable) shoes more often than I care to think about. The most important thing is to not get discouraged in your job search. Don't doubt your self-worth or your employability. (Is that a word?) Apply for anything and everything you think you might be qualified for. Trust me, working at Sears was not my first choice after the laundromat imploded...but I've been there since February and I love it tons more than I thought I would.

Oh dear... Very sorry to hear what happened Grey, I really hope you find a good job soon! You can do it! My friend almost gave up after losing his job, but he managed to find one recently after applying to exactly 57 different places! Hopefully you won't have to apply to nearly as much though. And wow, I didn't know the conditions for unemployment payments were so strict.
