Articulation is very important. I have been so spoiled by Volks/Obitsu that I can't bear a doll without arm and leg joints anymore. The face is also important. A doll should be pretty. I can't stand dolls that smirk or grimace and I hate Barbie's toothy grin.

I think "realism" sums it up nicely for me - both in sculpts and posing. Then there's versatility. I'm planning photostories, so the dolls should be able to show different emotions.
All of that is useless however if I don't have an idea for a character. So far I'm still busy shelling existing OCs, but in the case of Iplehouse Bianca the idea came after seeing the doll (she's the reason for the secondary "fantasy setting" I'm planning). I don't think I'd get dolls just because they're pretty - if there's one I love I look for a character that "fits" and get them after I've found one. I don't believe I could bond with a character-less doll.
There's a cat in "complicated" =^.^=

To me posing and a pretty face are important, and an overall aesthetic is a must too. Like I don't like art dolls with hip ball joints rather than hip sockets, they creepy me out even when I find the rest of the doll beautiful.

I also need my dolls to be double jointed. I sold my first resin doll's body because it was single jointed, and finally she got her body back after about a year, but from a different company that's very beautiful so now she's a hybrid.

Distinctiveness, versatility, and ability to be customized to my (often unusual) specifications. :)

Overall design of the body and joint engineering is pretty important - it has to look pretty and still pose nice! I also tend to like semi-realistic faces generally with a smile. It has to show the personality of the character in mind - looking exactly like the character isn't as important for me (for YOSD or MSD). Now SD size (aka "adult") is a completely different can of worms - if they don't look like the character in the face, I will mod them until they do.

Oh, I'd like to add something to what I posted earlier - LEGS. My dolls need to have pretty shaped legs. I loooove a good pair of legs :D

For me it used to be all about the sculpt, now it's always all about the posing! I can learn to love a face, but they have to be able to hold poses!
A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

It always seems to be the sculpt that first grabs my attention. And elfy ears or other such fantasy-type dolls are always a bonus. But I have to admit I like a pretty body, too. One that looks good no matter what sort of outfit it's wearing. If the body looks blocky or awkward I'll probably pass, even if I like the head. And posing is a definite plus, which is probably why I'm such a fan of Fairyland. Their bodies are beautiful AND they pose like whoa. Plus, their sculpts are pretty much what drew me into this hobby to begin with, way back when they were part of Luts. I've got a major thing for stylized anime-type sculpts, although lately I've been into the more realistic sculpts like Iplehouse, too. And I love Soom which combines an awesome mix of realism and fantasy, pretty features and really amazing bodies.

I don't really "look for" anything... I just keep seeing things and wanting them.
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@
