It sounds like the school experiment is close to the specific reaction I'm talking about. It's a bit specialized and does use some rather unhappy chemicals, so I wouldn't suggest it unless you really wanted to make a lot of mirrors.
I also want to make a little correction to the spray paint suggestion -- I think the link I listed is talking about mirror spray, which is a metallic/mirror-like spray paint. I've never used it, and I've only seen a few photos of results, but it would probably be more mirror-like than the gift wrap suggestion.

I finall got to open up my balloon and posted another post titled Eden's mirror problem. I forgot who can't check right but someone sent me a link to a craft site ang they have this mirror stuff that can be cut to pieces
so cool. Can't buy i at the moment though, not yet >:D
