The last time I actually watched Dr. Who the guy had curly hair and a multicolored scarf. Not even sure which one that is, since I was a kid. I've thought a few times of getting caught up, but there's just so much of it now it seems too daunting a task.

Sound's like Tom Baker - Doc4, he's one of my favourites. Absolutely perfect for the role, even if he was clearly just being Tom Baker, rather than actually acting half the time!

Doctor Who generally lets you jump on wherever - there is a continuity of sorts, but you don't need to know it to enjoy the show. (It often contradicts itself) I reckon Capaldi's first episode would be a perfect joining point if you're interested! Generally new Doctor episdoes reiterate what the show's all about

I second the being able to just jump in part, each story or adventure seems self contained enough. I have an adventure of each Doctor, to get an idea of what they're about, and that's about it. Try a little bit of each one and watch who you like.

I never could get into Dr. Who. Guess it's just not my thing. I prefer the Firefly style of sci-fi.

I jumped in to Dr. Who starting with the 9th doctor. So far, #11 Matt Smith is my favorite. He's just so FUN. I'm still going through season seven, but once that's done, I plan to go back and watch from the very beginning of the series and get an idea of what Drs. 1 through 8 were like. I know when I was reeeaaally little my mom used to watch Dr. Who, but I don't remember much of it except it was in black and white at the time and the Dr. was old. lol It's such a long-running series, though, it'll be interesting to see how much it changes over the course of the (earlier) series.

I dunno, a female doctor would be different, but I just can't imagine a girl playing the role. I think I'd probably lose interest, to be be honest. Yes, I like my eye candy. And yes, even though the new Dr. is older, he's handsome. I'm curious to see his future interactions with River Song. Although, admittedly, Rose is still my favorite companion. I sorta wish they'd bring her back, too.

I also started with the 9th doctor. Nine is totally my favorite, although Eleven is a close second. And of course I love Tenant, but I never just want to hug him like I do the others. I've tried watching some of the earlier Dr's but I just can't get in to them. The feel of the earlier shows is just too different from what I love about the newer ones.

Larry made the interesting observation that where tv shows in the US are created around the premise that the main character(s) have gotten into a situation and you don't know IF they will get out of it, Dr. Who is created around the premise that you know the Doctor is going to solve the situation, you just don't know HOW. If that sort of thing is not your cup of tea, you won't like Doctor Who.

It's rather like murder mysteries when you put it that way. There seem to be two major brands of murder mystery. HOW they solve the known crime versus finding WHO committed the crime.

VV's hubby has a great way of putting it. Is the BBC version of Sherlock a 'how they solve it' too? I'm wanting to see that but things have conspired against my getting the DVDs so far.

On the happy side of life I'm minding a fan page that was expecting a wave of fan dumb to surge in and so far it's been okay.

I keep trying to get into Dr Who and it just never seems to take lol. Which is strange as I generally like BBC TV and I'm a hopeless sci fi geek. But yeah...I just never seem to be able to get into it. I feel like I'm missing out a little.

As for rejoicing-my hubby gave me a lawn ticket book to see the Cleveland Orchestra at their outdoor summer venue for my birthday earlier this year. FINALLY was able to take advantage and saw Holst's The Planets, (as well as a really lovely cello piece by Barber). It was amazing!
