Free Faceups Maybe...?

I think that your best first bet is establishing yourself as a member of the group and talking about whatever dolls you chose so people can know you. Most folks will probably hesitate to send things to someone that they don't know in anyway, so delurking to talk will help them have more confidence in you.

Many people are willing to give faceup newbies a try - so once they know you a bit and see some of what you've done they will probably be willing. Just remember, while a feeler thread like this is ok, any actual thread relating to providing (even a free) service, when you plan on doing so, will need to be in the Sell Your Skills section of the Swap Meet.

I was going to write something along these lines. I won't send my dolls, even just the heads, to anyone unless they've got a solid reputation. I hear too many stories of commissions just not coming home.

I'm going to take this as a discussion about how one would feel about sending their dolls to beginners as "practice pieces", rather than anyone offering that service.

If I didn't do my own face-ups, I think the only way I would consider sending a doll head, or really, any item that I place any value in, (whether that's actual monetary value or personal value) to a beginner like that, would be if that individual was already an established member of the community, with plenty of positive feedback for other types of transactions, and a list of materials they would use on the doll. Too many things out there are just not safe for our resin or vinyl kiddos, and beginners may not be aware of this.

WriteSomething, please know that we are not trying to discourage you. I actually sent two of my doll heads to someone who (though established they were someone I didn't personally have any relationship with) had just started doing their own face-ups and offered free ones. I was a little scared about getting my doll heads back, but naturally she sent them with no issues - not even a delay. However, while I appreciated that the face-ups were free (economy being tough and all) when I got them back I about cried because their faces looked like they were done by someone who was just starting out. To be blunt, they were amateurish.

I'd suggest you get a couple of practice heads of your own to work with. You can often find inexpensive heads rolling around the MP on DOA (pun intended  ) and even Mint on Card often has practice heads available to buy straight from them. I'm not sure about other dealers, but it's worth contacting them to see. This would give you a few different sculpts to practice on at your convenience and you could redo them as often as you wanted without dealing with deadlines and the demands of your customer. Take photos of your progression! If no one but you ever sees the first few attempts you will appreciate being able to tell how far you progress as you go. Then you can use some of those photos as examples of the work you are able to do to potential customers.

If there is a group of doll collectors in your area, offer your services to them. My doll group has even hosted a couple face-up get-togethers where face-ups where done and practiced during the meeting.

And one more thing - if you want to establish trust, give your customer your full name and email - and either phone number or address. You have their information, and I personally think it's only proper that they have yours. You have a precious items of theirs, after all - and the likelihood of someone going all stalker on you is very rare.

It can be time consuming getting established, but in the end I think you'll see it was worth it.

Hopefully it was just a newbie burning out and not someone looking for people to scam.

If any other purple names read this hang around the forum, share pictures of your stuff, build trust with us. In the past we've had some people who have tried to ruin it for everyone else so it's not you.
