Tips for Sewing Pleather/Vinyl

Postby Greyhaunt » Tue Sep 27, 2011 11:19 am

For dolls all seasons are reasons for costumes and lots of times costumes involve pleather or vinyl. As I am currently sewing with thin shiny vinyl, I thought I'd put some of the tips I discovered here for others who may need them!

1. Use a Teflon foot to avoid the pleather/vinyl sticking.

2. Another option if you do not have a Teflon foot is to stick a piece of matte Scotch tape on the bottom of your presser foot. Trim off all excess tape not touching the foot. This option works well when the Teflon or glide foot will not work for patent leather/pleather.

3. Don't use pins anywhere other than seam allowances as all pin holes will be permanent and show. Paperclips can make a great substitute for pins!

4. More hints for helping it through your sewing machine: use tissue paper or wax paper over the vinyl to give the foot something to "grab" and gently tear it off after done. Others put some talcum or baby powder on the vinyl to give grip.

Thank you Greyhaunt! I always handsewed pleather/vinil leaving those irritant pin markings, I never thought about using paperclips XD

Same here... I made myself a corset last year with vinyl that had pinholes in it... And I have a whoooole ton of paperclips going unused.
