Living with a smoker

Postby versora » Wed Jan 29, 2014 2:21 pm

Hi all. It's me again. I'm just glad everyone here is so nice. Anyway I have another question/concern.

Smokers. Have you lived with them, are living with one/them?

And how do you protect a doll from a smoker's environment. I live in a very small apartment. My husband is a smoker, who refuses to go outside to smoke when I ask him to. It bothers me, make everything smell bad. I can't even donate my old clothes. But I at least have tons of fabric for doll clothes. I'm afraid I may have to resort to plastic bubbles to keep my dolls and their items smoke free.

Well first off, I have to say it's extremely disrespectful of him not to smoke outside. Above and beyond the smell, he's damaging your health by smoking in the house.

That being said, speaking from experience, I kept my dolls in another room while living with my ex. It sucked, because I liked having them sitting with me, but after he damaged my white skin ResinSoul Ai irreparably, I just kept them away.

the donating clothes is easy , you fill your washer add softener and let it soak then wash and rewash they are fine and don't smell. as for the dolls, I don't let people smoke in my house. but my belated spouse and his "friends" we will call them weird long story I don't want to get into. smoked up a chimney at a point in time in the prior place we rented the clothes were horrible and I mean horrible made it hard for me to breath and gave me a headache to be near them and my aunt helped me wash them and remove all the smell it worked.

Ah. We don't have a washer and dryer, more like a communal laundromat. The only room he doesn't smoke in is the bedroom. We have an open apartment. HUD is the worst, but it's what can be afforded. So we have a kitchen/eating area and right beside it is our living area. And one bathroom with two bedrooms. So I can't escape. I don't like teeny tiny apartments.

That stinks, (literally), that he won't smoke outside!
I don't know that there IS anything you can do to prevent them from picking up the smell. A separate room won't guarantee that the smell won't absorb into the clothes/wigs/resin etc.
Just be sure to be upfront and honest when/if you ever sell any doll related items or participate in swaps. As someone with a severe cig. smoke allergy, I can't tell you how frustrating it is when a swap partner or seller claims that their items come from a 'smoke free' environment, when in actually it's a smoke free room in a smoker's house. My allergies go bananas every time.

Yeah. I owe that much the the swap person or buyer. But since I plan on buying my first ever BJD, It'll be a very long time before I have to sell him. And most of my other dolls and stuffed toys are pretty much my treasures. I am like a dragon protecting it's hoard of glistening jewels when it comes to my stuffed toys and what few dolls I do own. *chuckles*

I live with two smokers, and it's frustrating. I try to keep them away from where they smoke, but there are time when I'm doing something with them, and that's when one of them comes out and smokes a storm. I swear it's radar.

You could get a tote and put them in while you're not doing anything with them. Keeping them in a separate room doesn't hurt, but it's not foolproof, trust me. I do recommend it though because if not, the yellowing process that happens tends to speed up. Other than that, there really isn't too much you can do.

I lucked out a bit in that the room I kept everyone separate was upstairs. We had a townhouse, and there was absolutely no smoking upstairs, once I kicked the roommates out.

Ah, well that's good. When we eventually get a house, I'll have a no smoking area. That could help as well, and a tote is good. I can also put him in his box, and then in a tote. May sound OCD. But air tight containers sound good about now.

Get him an e-cig. He still gets to smoke, and your dolls don't. Not to mention you don't! I was skeptical until I was actually next to one. I am so allergic to smoke that the emt's had to be called just because of a smokers clothing when he got too close to me. No reaction to e-cig and the person who smoked it! I am not advocating smoking, and please understand that it is still bad for you, but this way only the person who chooses to smoke has the risks.
