Strung Vinyl?

Postby ghostdollie » Sat Mar 08, 2014 1:19 pm

I'm really sorry if this topic has been done to death, but I can't find info on whether or not any company is currently producing strung vinyl 1/3 bjds.(Other than htf DDIs on the secondary market.) I have 1/3 resins and Obitsus, and 1/4 vinyls, but my ideal doll would be 1/3 scale, have ball joints, traditional stringing, and be made of hard vinyl like a Goodreau.( And be a dude, but that's not strictly necessary!) Any ideas? Thanks all!

It's hard to find one, and the only thing I have ever found is only DD1
Also, Hujoo sell ABS doll that strung with elastic too. They have both girl and boy available but only in 1/4 scale. However, their joint lock system is unique and hold the pose very well(based by people experience)

Good luck on finding one :)

Thank you for your reply! This definitely confirms my suspicions. Going to have to pressure Hujoo to go even bigger I guess!

I believe Dollmore's 16" vinyl fashion dolls are strung, too, but that's still smaller than you want. Good luck!

That's so funny, because i was thinking the same thing! Like, hmm, rigid pvc piping from the hardware store... Then stealing the actual ball-joints from another doll...

I believe Dollmore's 16" dolls are actually resin. The 12" are available in PVC though.

And yes, you definitely could convert a vinyl doll into a strung doll, I have thought about it. http://www.shapeways.com/model/558794/bjd-joints-main-used-001.html?li=search-results&materialId=6

Out of curiosity, is there a reason why you want a strung vinyl doll in particular?

Wow, thanks for that link! I'd love to have a mess of ball joints to play with! Sorry to be a techno-dope, but are they selling the joints themselves or software to print them yourself, or...?
Anyway, I'm looking for a vinyl, strung 1/3 to combine what I think are my favorite qualities all in one doll. Big, but lightweight, not fragile, and with that slightly floppy quality of elastic strung dolls. Just dreaming I guess!
I have a big variety of bjd types and love almost everything about each one, but it does make me think about what my ideal would be.
My strung resins are somewhat more "huggable" whereas the vinyls still have all their fingers!

Shapeways prints the actual joints. There are lots of fun things there, and if you actually design things in 3D it is a company that will print them in a variety of materials for you. You can upload your products for others to buy, it is kind of the 3D version of Zazzle.

The other option to make joints is wooden balls. They come in a variety of sizes, are usually pre-drilled, and can have the slots cut into them. I recommend getting a caliper if you don't already have one, because it will be very useful determining what size you need. You will need to support the torso area as well, vinyl is soft. If you make a vinyl into a strung doll, I hope you take lots of in progress pictures and share with us!
