Is this a Jenny?

Postby mollym » Mon Dec 31, 2018 8:49 pm

Hi!
I've had this doll for a few years. She's a thrift shop find. She was naked when I brought her home.
I think she's a Jenny, but, she has a bendable solid body like Gumby. Is anyone familiar with this one?

Yes, that is a Jenny - or perhaps one of her "friends", and as a matter of fact that particular body is often referred to as the Gumby body! It wasn't a huge success so they are not that common to come across so congrats on the find!

Thank you! I'm trying to identify all the dolls I can. Until joining up here, no one else has ever had any interest in the rest of my collection outside my BJDs. A few of them I've had since I was a kid, some I just happen upon at a thrift shop and sometimes I really, really like a mass produced doll and get it for myself. For whatever reason, the ones I pick up thrifting are often the unusual ones.

Thrifting is always fun :)

If you can get a good photo of her eyes I can probably tell you if that is actually Jenny, or which one of her "friends" it might be. Eyes are the easiest way to tell them apart :)

Thank you Greyhaunt!

Thrifting is fun. I love to browse for vintage toys and dolls. I seldom find anything, but when I do, I'm usually very thrilled. I found this doll a few years back, maybe in 2013. She's certainly a very pretty doll and so unusual I couldn't pass her up. I think she was a $1 well spent.

Here are a couple shots of her face. Thanks for your help. I tried to look up these dolls and found very little. I definatly did not see this body anywhere, and haven't had any luck since. The one thing I really want to know is if it's TPE or not. That way, I know how to preserve it best and remove stains. If it's TPE, I can easily remove the foot bottom stains with mineral oil. It has a bit of TPE odor, according to my bf. My sense of smell is too poor to pick up on things like that. She doesn't have any cracks or anything, but I'd like to prevent it if possible.

Ok, so this is Jenny's friend Sayaka. I've only ever seen her as blond before LOL. As for the body, I'm afraid I don't know what it's made of. I know it's officially known as the Photogenic (PG) Body and was released between 2000 and 2003.

I remember that once I got a bunch of second hand Jenny and Friends dolls and one of them had the PG body but something had gotten really weird with it. The normal ones have a softish smooth feel - this one almost had an oily feel to it. It was so gross I ended up throwing it away because I couldn't get rid of the weird feel.

They might be a type of silicon body - but honestly, I'm not sure.

Enjoy your Sayaka though -she's really an awesome find!

Thank you, Greyhaunt!!!

Okay, oily is another reason to make me think it's TPE and not silicone. The plasticizer (sp?) will sometimes have reactions to other materials, heat and moisture, or might have been mixed poorly during production if it's TPE. It's usually a material made for disposable items, and is often the grippers on toothbrushes and such. Nothing meant to last very long. If that's the case, then it's amazing the only staining is on the feet. I'd love to get shoes for this one, but she's an odd foot size, so I'll have to keep my eyes and ears open or search eBay better. I'm sure I can find or make her a more proper outfit to her character. She's been wearing something cute, but since I know who she is, then I'd like to try to get her looking close to her original state. I see a few lines now searching under 'Photogenic Body' so that is helpful, maybe I can find a clone still in the package to know what she is suppose to look like. She could have came in a swim suit or as a larger package with different accessories. Wow, the packaged dolls sure do have a high asking price.

Thanks for the name of the body, the sculpt and the production period. I really appreciate the help with identification. I figured, if anyone would know, this group would. It's so odd that this one would have shown up in a thrift shop anyhow, sort of fun to think about how that came to be. Her outfit was missing, but her hair was in great shape. I recently gave her a wash before these photos and it was very un-eventful combing the hair. Nothing fell out at all. I'll keep you updated if I can find her a proper outfit or a photo of the packaged doll.

I may have found a listing or her in the original package. The date of release would be about right.

I think you are right! The box says Sayaka and those are gumby body hands for sure.

And it makes more sense for one of the kimono dolls to have made it here as opposed to one of the plain photogenic versions. I bet someone bought her for the kimono and then donated the doll. A shame - it wouldn't fit a barbie very well since Jenny is a bit shorter.
