Mohair or synthetic wigs?

Postby sailor_ashes » Wed Nov 09, 2011 11:27 pm

Hi everyone! :D

I was just wanting to hear everyone's opinion on their mohair or synthetic wigs. Do you like one over the other? What are the pros and cons of each wig? The reason I'm asking is that I have a very hard time choosing between mohair and synthetic wigs, and I would like other peoples feedback! Also, please post pics! I would love to see your dollieh and their gorgeous hair. <3

the best of both, and get synthetic mohair? xD

I like both, but it just depends on the doll.

I do however, not like on the skin mohair. Personal reasons for that though. It looks very beautiful, however.

I have a wefted mohair wig, I think it's kemper. It's so nice. I dyed it to just the right color. :D (that is my favorite wig!)

I personally prefer synthetic because I have found mohair to be messy and hard to keep nice. I had to adjust Mayumi's every single shoot cause it wouldn't stay right.

But I do think mohair can be essential to get some looks right, like say for a male anime themed bjd.

Here's two comparison pics of Mayumi's two wigs.

Depends on the doll and the look I want. If I want smooth controlled hair then synthetic all the way. If I want something wilder then Mohair. For some reason I tend to prefer mohair for my tiny dolls as opposed to my larger ones - probably because many of them are spirit creatures who have an animal aspect and mohair is more ....well...animal-like LOL.

as far as regular 1/6 dolls - I tend to root them so that has never been an issue - but if I wanted very anime-ish hair I might try mohair and style it with gel.

I always go with synthetic. I've liked very few mohair wigs that I've seen. Also too, none of my boys (or the one girl) has 'wild' hair so mohair really wouldn't be the look I'd be going for anyway.

Is that a mohair wig though..? Isn't it faux-fur..? I don't like fur wigs too much...

This is my Pullip's new mohair wig and I LOVE it, I ordered one in the same colour for my first resin BJD too, I don't think I'll ever buy anything other than mohair anymore XD It's so pretty, big and soft ^^

I prefer synthetic on fashion dolls and mohair on porcelains though I use both on either. I have a pretty large collection of wigs of both kinds. The mohairs I've basically scavenged from nicer porcelains. The rest I've either gotten on dolls, swapped for, or bought cheaply. I like the Liv and MT wigs a lot for my big girls too. They're not as nicely made as the Monique ones I have but they do just fine restyled on the more modern dolls.

When I get a new doll that has a wig I don't need that's a more expensive one generally I will sell that one and just use a cheaper wig. The Monique type wigs are nice but I'm not that picky and the less expensive ones will do me. I buy dolls just for the dolls most of the time. About 3/4 of the time I sell the clothes and the wig if the doll has one right off it so I can afford another doll.

I like to make my own clothes anyway. I've made a few wigs too. It's not that easy for me to do so I don't do it often, but I do sew up one every now and again out of hair extensions or wool. Sometimes I pull apart mohair yarn skeins, use that. I like interesting textures and colors, mixing a couple of shades of wool yarn to look like real hair. I don't like mohair on skin though.

I won't pay premium prices for plain or colored wool when I can just use fancy designer yarns and make my own mixes up. I recycle doll hair too, hardly never buy it. I do like the hair you can find online but in the end I decided it's just not worth the money to me to buy that way. For what I'd pay for one project I can do 10 my way. The synthetic hair extensions have gotten so good of late it's not all that hard to find hair now at the beauty store that's a near match for doll hair. Used to be most of it was too coarse and some still is, but there are several brands out there now that are close enough to real doll hair for me to use them. Anyway I like a little texture in my doll hair/wigs sometimes. I'd rather not always have hair that's super soft and straight.

I'm in the process of re-rooting an Edward Barbie now with a really interesting nicer yaki type extension and while it's not the smoothest hair I've ever used it's one of the best rainbow red shade blend I've ever used. I'll definitely be using it again. I'm always careful to rinse the extensions first, in case of dye loss, it happens, but I've never had hair from an extension stain a doll though I've been warned that's possible.

I've only bought synthetic wigs so far.
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

Mohair always looks unkept. However, it can be the only way to replicate some of those wacky anime hair styles.

Thanks for your advice, everyone! :D I think I'm going to give both types of wigs a try, just to see if I have a preference. :) But I have another question! What kind of wig cap do you think best prevents staining, silicone or fabric? OR, are there other types of wig caps that work best? :P
