None of the options are going to be comfortable for him, aside from what the vet said oh so cheerfully over the phone, "when the time comes to put him down". I keep crying even at that thought.

Losing a pet is really friggin hard. You don't expect it to be so hard until the time comes and it feels like you were just slammed by a Mac truck. I couldn't even consider euthanasia for my cat since I kept telling myself "She'll get better she has to." but, you will give your pup the best 4 months of his life and send him off knowing he is well loved. (tearing up now :< )

Just surround yourself with loved ones and people who will support you. My husband was not a big help when my cat died, since he doesn't understand human + animal bonds. :/

Almy, my dear pug Oogie was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth summer before last. He was an older dog, and, after much thought, I decided against the surgery/chemo option, and it was absolutely the right decision to make. They gave him a couple of months, but he lasted until February of this year. He was on strong pain medicine which eventually led to kidney failure (I think), but when he refused to eat, I knew the time had come. You just know. He was put to sleep with me holding him, and it was an easy, gentle, peaceful death.
I have met several people who chose surgery/chemo, and every single one of them says that they would never do it again. The dog is very sick from it and doesn't understand why, and every one of the dogs died within a couple of months after the treatment was completed.
I know how hard this is for you, but you are making the right decision to go with medication. Do not let anyone tell you differently, and don't beat yourself up for not spending the money. Even if you had it, medication would be the right thing to do. Keep him as comfortable as you can and give him all the love you can for as long as you can.
I will keep you in prayer. I know that's what gave Oogie and me the extra time.
Love and blessings,
Elizabeth

Oh Almy I'm so sorry to hear that. I totally started crying when I read that. My dog is going to be 11 this summer, and Shiba Inus usually only live 12-14 years so I'm trying to brace myself. Best wishes and lots of love to you and your four legged companion, and my sympathies. They rush through their short little lives and leave us to deal with the aftermath.

Thanks for the thoughts, the boyfriend took him over to a friends house tonight, and even just not being here already seems so odd. This is the first pet that has really ever been mine. I did spend at least $40 on treats, rawhides, and toys for him today. I think he's just confused as to why his people won't stop crying.

Today was the one year anniversary of my dad's passing. Oddly enough, my husband was clearing an SD disc and came across photos of the last time my parents were up here visiting (Christmas 3 years ago). It hit me hard for a while because I wasn't expecting that.

I miss him.

Well the husband has left for CLEET so I'm officially by myself til half way through June. Fun fun. Lets just hope my water doesn't break and I can make it to my induction date without any issues. I managed to get my Faun together yesterday and there are still issues with his legs.
