Questions about Obitsu 27cm males & other dolls

Postby richila » Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:42 pm

Okay, I have only been collecting ball jointed dolls for a little over a year. I love my Planet Doll Minis, but I need some guys to do the stories I have in my head. I have the Goodreau resin boy, but his face and body are immature and his posing is barely adequate.
So, I was wondering:
Can the obitsus stand by themselves?
I really like the slim male physique, but how slim are they? I would hate for my PDs to be too big to sit on laps.
Does anyone have a doll with the Ares head?
Would I be better off with Volks Neo bodies? How do they compare?
So far, all my dolls have changeable eyes.
Do you prefer the heads with eyeholes or without? Why?
Do you ever do photostories with both kinds of dolls?

I know I have a lot of questions, but any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Can the obitsus stand by themselves?
Yes, Obitsu can stand by themselves. They have magnets on the bottom of their feet to help them stand. However they stand pretty good even without them.

I really like the slim male physique, but how slim are they?
The Obitsu slim males are slimmer than the reg. Obitsu. DollyKim has a website that compares the different dolls. http://dolfielittles.com/

Does anyone have a doll with the Ares head?
Yes I have an Ares head without the eyeholes that I rooted the head.

Would I be better off with Volks Neo bodies? How do they compare?
I think that Volks reg. male look better than the Obitsu male reg. bodies. However the Obitsu dolls stand up much better than the Volks in my opinion. I like both myself.

Do you prefer the heads with eyeholes or without? Why?
I like heads without eyeholes because you can get more expression in the face by painting them on. However eyehole ones are nice too.

Do you ever do photostories with both kinds of dolls?
There are several members here that do 1/6 photostories. Go under the photostories zone section. viewforum.php?f=18

Size wise the Obitsu Slim can share clothes and patterns with Taara Jenny's boyfriend Jeff, he fits Barbie clothes easily. (part of the reason I wrote my book) Mine turns five this summer and touch wood is still on his first parts and moves like he did when he was new. Just got the regular male over the Holidays and I've been dressing him in a mix of Ken clothes and those sized for the Dragon customs. Having switched my girls and minis to Obitsu I'd recommend them first. On the Volks side I like the Neo Goh for his looks but they do get floppy.

None of mine have magnets but only because it was a price issue when ordering 6 bodies at once. My 60 has magnets and they're fun.

The Obitsu slim male can wear Barbie's pants -- but Ken's clothes tend to be a bit big on him (he can wear the shirts, they're just loose). I like the magnet feet (because I do some insane posing for stories sometimes), but the Obitsu guy can usually stand without them (the Obitsu girl's feet are too small, she NEEDs the magnets, but the guys don't have that problem). The Obitsu slim male comes with extra hands (gripping hands and fists), which are nice to have, too. He can wear any of the slim male heads, or even the female Obitsu heads (with adjustments to the neck peg). A lot of Obitsu slim males use the W-3 Obitsu woman's head, to create the more youthful "bishi" look.

The Volks Neo-Goh is a bit taller, with better defined chest muscles, but doesn't pose quite as well -- the tightness/floppiness of the joints varies a great deal with the individual doll. Getting the optional (larger) feet helps their stability, the feet they come with aren't as good (but they fit very well into boots, so if you're going to put him in boots anyway, the default feet work better). The Neo-Goh also comes with extra hands, they're a little harder to swap out than the obitsu, but still nice to have.

Obitsu slim males and Volks Neo-Gohs can swap heads and look pretty good. I'm personally not as fond of the eye-hole heads on this scale, so I haven't tried those -- all my guys have painted faces.

I also like the 'standard' guys for both Obitsu and Volks, but they are much more like action-figure bodies, a bit more muscular (actually, a LOT more muscular for the Volks). Both pose very well and stand very well. Additional hand styles must be purchased separately. Note: Heads for the standard guys are not interchangeable. Unless you're really good at modding, make sure you buy the right head if you get one of the standard males.

(For pictures, I've got a running photostory series under "Photostories" on this site, with all types of dolls).

I hate to be the evil person to point this out - but you can't get the Volks Neo Goh anymore :( They have discontinued a lot of their EB line of 1/6 scale dolls...supposedly they are coming out with a new line, but I haven't heard anything more than that in a long time :(

Personally, if you want a MANLY looking body the Volks is, by far the best sculpted. However if you want a well POSING body, go with Obitsu!

I'd like to add that Volks 1/6th dolls tend to be WAAAAY fragile. (I can't say they're "more" fragile than Obitsu, because Obitsu isn't fragile at all!!)
Especially at the hip, I've noticed. At least, I've had one of my Neo-Gohs crotch area "explode" on me... (That sounds very wrong.)
So you definitely want to be gentle if you decide to hunt down some Neo-Gohs.

ok I snagged lyssa, RS Bei, and Minmax, obitsu 27cm male regular. took a side by side comparison. I think that the bodies look okish together the bulk of the arms and legs on minmax is bigger than than Lyssa but I think his waist is smaller. I think the obitsu slims are actally slimmer than Lyssa, but my SO is asleep so I cant snag one of his guys. you can look at dollykims site for a side by side of the different boy bodys. I think the biggest visual difference is the heads. hope this is helpfull. (ignore the mess on the table, Im in the middle of a faceup)
ps. Minmax not only stands but can do some awsome stunts...which is a good thing as he is a comic book character (his face is heavily modded, the ears and nose have been sanded much flatter and the defined eyes were filled in to make him look more like the character.)

Thanks leopardessmoon, this picture really helps because I know the proportion between a Bei and my Planetdoll Minis. If you can get a picture of a slim with your Bei, I would appreciate it.

P.S.That outfit is adorable on Lyssa. Girls this size are so easy to spoil.

Except for shoes - I have the most HORRIBLE time finding shoes that don't look oversized on my BBB 1/6 girls :(
