Damn - a few years ago when I 1st watched Tom Baker era Doctor Who I saw a documentary about how the title sequence was made. It involved stretching a plastic bag and filming the odd effect that came about with special lenses.

Now I think I know what it is - it looks remarkably like a birefringence pattern... Completely ruined the magic! (Damn you degree!)

Yeah - the thing is and this is probably completely wrong so please tell me if it sounds like utter crap... (don't know v.much about the technique)
Slit screen normally only really stretches out images - it doesn't completely change the colours. I think the original 2001 images were already pretty odd looking corally things weren't they?

A white plastic bag should then just look a bit weird and silvery... which it does a bit in some places. But then there are the weird interference patterns that look like a smeared out spectra. Which when I watched it for the 1st time in ages yesterday made me immediately go "birefringence!!"

But I'm probably wrong - why on earth would the bag be in crossed polarisers??

Edit: I was right!! It is birefringence! They did place the bag between polarisers! THAT IS AWESOME!!

I dreamed I was trying to wash my dolls in a bath tub o-o I had no idea why and I was afraid they'd get too damp and get soft. I don't know if resin really does that, but yeah. Odd dream. xD
