bjdbaby? Probably not legit, but asking just in case...

OkamiKodomo says it. If I had known my doll was a recast when I bought it I still think I would have gone forward because the original is impossible to find and way over priced, and I knew I was going to repaint it any way. He's not going anywhere while I'm here and by the time I'm gone there will be someone else to look after my dolls.

I'm late to the thread, but I was still able to find the website from google.

I can safely say that going to their website and seeing a doll there, that I've wanted for a long time, that is no longer made...is very alluring.

All of me says 'No way!' but at the same time, I have bought many toys that were knock offs or fakes at Dollar Stores and the like. So there isn't much of a difference. The above post of Okami is very much how I feel and think about the subject.

I have to say, the idea of getting a cheaper recast unoa is very..... very tempting.

If you want an Unoa, just get a faceplate relatively cheap (http://noppin.ocnk.net/) and get a different brand body ;). Oh, and a custom headback by Buff or Amaeta.

That still won't be cheaper than buying the recast. The price point and the dolls match to the original is what makes the recasts so tempting.

It isn't that Unoa is limited. The doll is just produced briefly perhaps once or twice a year. It can only be bought from the company through a shopping service. So people charge $200 or more on top of what they payed for the doll on the second hand market. After seeing so many go for $800 to $1000 on the marketplace despite stains and chips around the joints and even unfinished or improper assembly - it's little wonder anyone would be willing to buy a recast.

It's also tempting just to buy one so that your floating (real) head will have a body.

I will also admit, a few years ago (back before I knew SD size was too large for me to handle) I bought a Dollmore Model body. I bought it because it looked so similar to the Dollshe body. Dollshe even made statements that they recasted it. At the time, Dollshe was still in hiatus and I knew I would never ever have the chance to own one. Even if I had saved enough money, I knew that I wasn't going to spend 1k on a doll...yet I wanted a Dollshe so bad. So I bought the DM Model body for my IoS Sezz.

I was exceedingly happy. I can understand what they mean in their letter response because of this. But I still find it wrong on almost all levels.

Oh man I remember that Dollshe/Dollmore case.
Dollmore used to sell Dollshe dolls. Then one day they produced that model - it wasn't a recast in the sense that it was an exact copy. They had sculpted on top of the original body and changed the jointing system but it was still recognizable for what it had been. The damning evidence was that the inside featured casting marks from the original Dollshe body.

I felt very bad for Dollshe. They had even come on DOA to vent their feelings. You really came to understand how personal that had been. In this way we can see how recasters hurt the original artist.

~*~
I am sort of torn on this issue. It doesn't matter that I "really want" a Unoa - I am not entitled to it. The artist shouldn't have to undersell themselves or attempt to take on a larger number of orders than they can handle to satisfy people.

A reseller doesn't have to take my budget into account when selling their doll. They can look at the doll's availability, see that it's hard to get and drive the price up as long as there is a demand for it. Some accept layaway payments and even longer ones than the original company accepts. I think that's fair. If I really wanted the doll I definitely could afford layaway.

A recaster does what is illegal some even claim they MADE the doll. Even if they say they didn't make the original but are selling the copies it is still art theft.
