bjdbaby? Probably not legit, but asking just in case...

Every artist on this forum could find something in your posts to agree with. If something was easy everyone would do it, those who think doll making is are dared to make one of their own and I mean a jointed doll.

yeah, I can tottally understand why someone would buy a recast, like buying bootleg videos or knitpicks yarn that every yarn store hates because its cheap. granted if I got a recast, I prolly wouldn't broadcast it around, but I wouldn't look down on anyone that would pay full price, nor look down on someone that knowingly got a recast. it comes down to economics and supply and demand, really.

Totally agreed again Okami.

I don't know if anyone had read what I posted, but I was venting a little because it offends me a bit that some people make it sound like they think indie bjd artists are the hardest working people in the world and all other kinds of artists have it easy. It's freaking hard to make it as an artist no matter what your medium. People make it sound like bjd artists are the 3rd-world-children-working-in-sweatshops of the art world or something and that it's the holiest of mediums. I feel like those implications are demeaning to how hard other artists work.

Ahhh so that's why the Juku Couture dolls reminded me of the Nano Haruka sculpt!! It was NOT a coincidence XD

I don't think anyone here would be thinking along those lines. I know a lot of folks here (self included) are artists of one kind or another. Some of us went to school for it and others work without the need of the degree. Some of us make dolls, some paint, or illustrate, or do 3d rendering. Many of us have a mix of mediums they focus on. The doll artists just get focus and a higher appreciation here since it's a doll forum. And as a doll community we do tend to find the small artist impressive since it's a huge undertaking on your own. If this was a painting or illustration or other art form based group, the dolls would not get nearly as much attention as the medium that is the focus of the group.

I had previously thought that I wouldn't buy a recast of any sort, but I suppose if the company was no longer in business I would probably be willing to buy the recast sculpt then since there's not a business to hurt.

Oh I didn't mean here in particular. I had just been reading too much in half a dozen doll oriented groups lol.

It's just, well amongst other things, there are people who have threatened to actually go to the house of people who own recasts and do them harm and/or destroy their property. Of course those are the people that really glorify the art and I've never seen this level of fanaticism in any other medium.

The one thing I am not sure about but would make a big difference is how are the people that come up with the sculpts compensated? At most big toy companies the designer comes up with a design and is paid for their time creating it but that is all. They do not get a royalty for each doll sold. Even if the line tanks it doesn't matter because they already got paid. Are they compensated like that or do they get a royalty for each doll sold?

I think that depends on the company.

See, that's also where my comparison with the video game developers fits in too, because the people who do the artwork only get paid for the actual work. They don't get royalties.

With the smaller doll companies where it's really just like 3 people or something I'm sure the artist's income is directly effected, but i don't know how many of the companies are like that.

I mean you see some doll artists sculpting for different companies sometimes. Some leave a company to sculpt and sell their won dolls, so to me that feels like they don't get royalties or they might be contractually obligated to stay with one company.

I won't go into my stance on recasts here, since that isn't the issue.

I do, however, feel like it's important for people who are new to the hobby to know about recasts. They can make up their own minds about how they feel, but to someone new to the hobby a website like this looks fairly legitimate. There is a part in the website's FAQ about them being recast dolls, but the english on that site isn't great, so it might be hard to tell exactly what they mean.

My stance on the recasts is that the people/company doing them are pirates and I have a very strong dislike of pirates. I've had my published novels/novellas pirated and that pissed me off to no end. Especially when you consider that some of the titles were selling for only $2.99. Hell, I've even had one one scumbag pirate one of my free reads! How low can you go to pirate a free read?

I have 2 dolls that are grail dolls. Unidoll Ark and Impldoll Miguel The Demon Hunter. Unidoll, as a company is gone and Miguel was limited to 100 worldwide. I couldn't get either one when they were available. I wouldn't purchase either as a recast despite neither one being available (except through the second-hand market) because those doing the recasts are pirates and I absolutely refuse to do anything to support or encourage pirates to continue on their scumbag ways.

Yeah, I've got pretty strong feelings about pirates.
