I know the feeling... It took me 5 years (and a year where I said screw it and went to Japan to teach English) to find a full time art position. Then after 7 years I lost it due to budget cuts. I was lucky enough to find the ONLY full time permanent art job within an hour of here last year. I count myself lucky I lost my job when I did, a larger district is consolidating and closing elementary schools (and cutting art of course... why would K-3 want/need art?) and there are MORE art teachers looking for jobs.

Are you going to sub or look for something else? My cousin just graduated and is so discouraged by the lack of jobs (early elementary) that she's considering working at a bank or something for a couple years. You don't get benefits for subbing (except long term) but it can get your foot in the door. Stuff happens, sometimes a school needs someone NOW, and if you have a good reputation with them, you can get in. I did several long term jobs that way, including an entire semester sabbatical leave, got health benefits and everything with that one!

Hang in there!

I know teaching is tough... had no idea it was a tough job to get too.

Depending on where you are... it's VERY tough. Schools just aren't hiring, they aren't replacing retirees, they are consolidating into larger classes or eliminating things that 'aren't important'... like music and art of course. >_<

An area that many teachers haven't known to look to for teaching positions these days are homeschool co-ops and online schools. In the past couple of years, there has been in increase in the number of students being pulled from public schools - and not just for religious reasons. There are more "secular" parents choosing to homeschool their kids and looking for nontraditional teachers and schooling. Homeschool co-ops aren't the same as private schools as homeschooled kids usually just take a couple of classes outside the home. However, there is also the emergence of the online school for those parents who aren't in a position to do the actual homeschooling themselves or whose children do better following someone else's direction.

I'd be more than happen to give you some suggestions, but a simple Goggle on homeschooling could give you a whole new perspective.

Homeschool is great, especially for those wonderful smart kids who might get discouraged or bullied for thinking outside of the box. Out here in California public schools are so messed up and overcrowded they're having commercials left and right for online schools.

Thanks for the encouragment guys. I'm still trucking for anything I can get my hands on. I'm a High school english teacher with Special Education certification. Although english teachers are a dime a dozen, Special education SHOULD be in demand, but it's not. There is a hiring freeze on subs for the past 4 years in the state of Georgia. So subbing is out. I'm trying to get into Supply Teaching (Long term subbing that only another certified teacher can do.) I'm also looking into online, non-traditional routes. I'm still getting nothing.

This past school year I worked at an inner city school inside Atlanta. It was HORRIBLE. I won't go into details, but I only lasted one year. I feel like crap for not renewing my contract, but I also don't want a job wondering if I'm going to make it out alive. After the second gun of the year was found in my classroom I knew I had to leave.

I'm not a bad teaching, at least I don't think so. I'm new and inexperienced, but not bad. I just need a chance in a school that won't chew me up and spit me out. :(

Can't blame ya. Firearms in the workplace (provided you're not in the military or the police) is pretty scary.

Boggles the mind doesn't it? All those kids who need the trained help, and no one hired to help them. *sigh*

Ah man... used to be you could at least sub. I know what it is like to not get subs in and just cover. You leave lesson plans for your class to do, and they just stick a sign on your door telling the kids to go to room X for a study hall. They can't DO stuff for my class unless they have materials!

EEKS!!! I've never done city, but my bro teaches music for the Rochester City School District (Rochester NY). Luckily he's at the Expeditionary Learning School, the poster-child for the city, so basically the BEST one to be at. But he still told me he wished he could get out of the city, he didn't like worrying if his 5th graders had brought a knife to school.

Good luck!!!!

I wish our states/country or whatever would put more effort into improving the school system. Why is one of the most important jobs, educating our youth, one of the lowest payed and under-appreciated? Makes no sense. >< Especially with all the crap you guys have to go through with crazy kids and unhelpful/non-existent parents. And the school districts never seem to be on the teacher's side.

O.O I am once again very glad I live in a small city. I know kids bully teachers, I think one of the math teachers got bullied into quitting when I was in high school though I never met him. Kids are scary.

Second time with almost instant dislike of a doll... I got the head in and it just looks like an older man, and he looks angry and frowny and I HATE it... I feel like crying or puking or both.
