bjdbaby? Probably not legit, but asking just in case...

and how is it more difficult?

For me the sculpey is too...floppy? to do what I want to do with it. I find it difficult to sculpt exactly what I want and have it hold it's shapewith distorting, especially with multiple pieces that need to fit together perfectly, like with jointing. It holds the press mold details just fine but I think that's because it requires less handling and therefore makes the clay less warm in the process? I don't know. It's entirely possible that's just my experience and personal preference and you might get great results.

With the polymer clay I make the arms or legs or body in one piece and then score the joints to break them apart after baking.

You can bake polymer clay multiple times as long as you don't go over the recommended temperature.

But before I did my polymer clay work I made a few test dolls with paper/stone clay to get familiar with the forms. And even now I'm not satisfied with some of the joints and want more practice.

It's not about lots of tools or touching it either. I use a single dental tool on my Apoxie Sculpt and old fashioned practice.

I haven't had any problems playing with Sculpey polymer clay... I prefer boiling it to baking it though.
I think it's just me, but polymer clay tends to crack less for me for some reason. I don't know if I let clay get too wet sometimes or what.

here are some good links for sculpting bjds:
I think a bunch are linked here: http://bjd-wtf.livejournal.com/1879.html

but I found these 2 in particular pretty comprehensive:

If the thickness is consistent, and at least 1/4 inch, and seams are well blended you shouldn't have cracks. I've taken to rolling out flat sheets then rolling the skin on to the foil guts. If you bake you can use a paper clay inside for bulking out but go for something that has minimal shrinkage. Just don't use styrofoam because of the fumes.

Tool wise I like the ones that are metal balls on one end and rubber tips on the other. They've got the most use.
