Glue help needed: for crafty stuff

Postby E-Beth » Thu Nov 01, 2012 1:59 pm

I'm working on some slippers and I need a better (more easily used) glue then the PVA (white craft glue) that I've been trying.

This is to glue the fabric of the uppers to the bottom of the shoe, and also probably to glue the insoles in place and the sole on.

I need a glue that has a 5 second or so "change your mind" time, rather than one that needs to be held in place for minutes before holding.
It needs to bond to cardboard, fabric, leather.
It should be slightly flexible when dry.
It should not expand when drying.

any ideas?

Other than the epic glue failure, my first attempt is showing promise.

Do you have a Joann near you? In their glue department they sell glue sets that have small tubes of a lot of craft glues - it's a great way to determine what will fit your needs.

I'm afraid most of the ones I use require a bit of holding time :(

Thanks, Greyhaunt. I'm heading out to the fabric store this afternoon and will look for those sets.
I don't mind holding stuff for a little while, but the "clamp for 15 minutes" is getting old.

I'm a great fan of low temp hot glue, or high temp for more holding power. You'd be amazed how much can be held together with hot glue.

Oh yea, I know that feeling. I use e-6000 a lot for beading and other crafts, not too sure how it is with fabric though :(

Do you guys get Pattex? That's my glue of choice for just about everything. It can be used in two ways: If you put the parts together when it's still wet it's got the "change your mind" time. You can put the parts together and even if they come apart slightly just make sure they don't slip from their designated place, wait until the glue dries and squeeze it together again.
Likewise, if you put it on both parts and wait until it dries, the layers of glue will stick together the instant they touch. It remains flexible, does not expand and will bond to just about anything except styrafoam which it tends to dissolve.
There's a cat in "complicated" =^.^=

That sounds great! but I've never heard f it.
I ended up with something called Fabri-tac that seems like it will work. I only have to hold it for about 15 seconds.
