Brush-on Sealant: When to Use It?

Postby fleacollar999 » Fri Jan 18, 2013 4:32 pm

I don't have my license, so I can't drive myself to the Hobby Lobby and even if I did I wouldn't have to money to pay for gas AND ModelMasters/Testors! There is however, an art store right down the street from my apartment! And it carries Liquitex brush-on sealers. So, I have read that I can use this on my vinyl dolls, but what about my resin ones? Would it be okay to use on them, too? I don't want to use it only for something horrible to happen :|

Well, I haven't read any reviews on brush-on sealant brands so I'm not even sure if that are safe for resin dolls but even if they were, I don't recommend them.

Simply because a lot of the face-up tools you use on resin dolls wouldn't work with brush-on sealants. I would imagine that it'd be fine (given that the sealant itself was not harmful to the dolls) if you all you used was paint, but if you use any sort of pastels or pearl powder then brush-on sealants would push them all aside while you're applying the sealant.

Yea, brush on sealant is just plain not recommended. There are some gloss ones that you use on lips and the eye area, but outside of that, it's not good practice.

Talk to someone at the art store. They might be able to order the Testors for you. They also might try to steer you towards some other aerosol sealers that they have on the shelf, but just explain to them that the product you want has been tested by doll owners and is well recognized as being safe for the materials your dolls are made of and you aren't interested in experimenting.
Another product they might be able to get that is doll safe is Vallejo Acrylic Aerosol Matte Varnish.

Thanks everybody! I will talk to them about the Testors! In the mean time I am having fun re-doing Lourdes' (my 27cm Obitsu) face-up!

I don't like spray sealants so I only use brush-on sealant. Works fine if you are only using acrylic paint and/or decals.
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

im using msc for sealant... the safest sealant for resin so far. and i do read that andreja, is now using liquitex for sealant for her face up commission. search for her deviantart, youtube or blog :D
not sure that its the same liquitex....

and when to use it,
give first layer of spray to the blank face before you painted or blush the face.
after blushing, you can seal everry step with a spray...my recomendation is watch for andreja's video on youtube XD
