Ah yeah, I actually do want to get a character doll (which is one reason I am considering the Smart Doll). I can't really risk getting an animal doll because my mother considers them "ungodly," and therefore liable to be thrown out, like what happened with my anime and manga stuff (though she doesn't seem to have noticed the rabbit art dolls/busts in my closet).
During the day I'm not really bothered by doll faces. It's only really at night.

Smart Dolls sound like they're going to be really awesome. If you get one you'll have to spam us for sure. <3 Also, I have a feeling they're going to be popular with the parentals because they lack detailed reproductive representations. XD Whereas Ivan came with three winkie options, the Smart Doll will rival a Ken doll. The girls have three different bust options but there's nothing below the belt.

It's the same for me. As a child I never found dolls creepy, but in later years it's happened. My 1/6 collection tends to end up on the bookshelf next to my bed, and once in a while I suddenly feel it's a bit... too much, and move them to the other side of the room before I sleep, or I feel like I'll just end up staring at them until they start moving. I've noticed faces in general make me a bit paranoid when I'm very sleep deprived: dolls, family portraits, photos in newspapers.

Normally, the only dolls I find creepy are those deliberately made to evoke an uncanny valley reaction, like cloth dolls with elongated limbs and blank faces. I've also discovered size is a factor: 1/4 scale and up makes me a bit nervous, but with 1/6 I feel I could probably take on my entire collection if they decided to go Chucky on me. :D

I agree starting with a small, cute and friendly doll might be best. But reading this thread I realized everbody has very different opinions on what makes a doll creepy, so for all I know that may be terrible advice. :)

The size does that getting used to. I associate 1/6 with Barbie and action figures that I find the more human childlike 1/6 bjd to be creepy. I treat my 1/3 like my action figures (OMG!!! I call them action figures instead of dolls to deflect the creepy doll factor O_o! ) I do suspect aesthetic plays a part in terms of what I find comfortable.

I understand the feeling, I used to be nervous around my Monster High doll of all dolls! What I found is if I'm worried, I put them somewhere they can't get out of without me noticing, like under a laundry basket. I know they can't move, but if I make sure of that I feel a lot safer. Another part of it might be a sort of... exposure therapy sort of thing? Get a (cheap) doll that's so over-the-top spooky you can't take it seriously, and get used to touching it and being around it. I think getting used to dolls is the key. If you think that would be too scary then by all means, stick to dolls you feel comfortable with. I just think the feeling of facing and getting over your fears could be very rewarding.

(I used to have a phobia of this one plant but I ripped one out of the ground and stomped on it and it didn't attack me or come to life like I was seriously afraid it would do (blame my parents telling me all about Day of the Triffids when I was like 7 or 8), and I even got a video of it. I still don't LIKE those plants and wouldn't want to be around it, but I'm not immediately terrified when I see one now. And yes. A plant. I'm weird, okay? D: )

Exposure therapy is a good way to go to get gradually used to things. And a barrier between the dolls sounds like a good idea too.

If you aren't sure about the sizes of the bigger dolls you might want to go to a doll meet up and see some. The 1/6 Obitsu and customizable figures without strings compare to Barbie but there's nothing in stores to compare others too. Some 1/4 are about 18" tall but they aren't built like the American Girl type. Until my 70cm arrived I couldn't even picture a doll the size of a small child and I had a 60cm before.

lol The plant story reminds me of when I was just little, I used to be TERRIFIED of leaves. Not the ones on the trees, the wrinkled-up dead ones on the ground that skittered and crackled whenever the wind blew. Yeah, being outside in autumn used to be a really bad time for me.

Of course, that fear eventually was replaced with another fear of spider webs, and I never got rid of that one. Not just spiders, but any kind of webs. Silk worms, dust webs ... they ALL creep me out. Not sure what exactly set it off, but I know its just 'cause you never see them coming. You're walking along, minding your own business, and all of a sudden, you've got a faceful of some bigass orb web you didn't even know was there.

Twice as bad if the spider still happens to be attached to it. O__x

I once lived in an apartment that had a HUGE orb web strung across my patio door, with a friggin spider the size of a pingpong ball smack in the center of it. Didn't open that door the entire two years I lived in it. There was even a point I was SURE that spider was dead because it did not move for WEEKS, and it was in the middle of winter and snowing .... but then all the sudden it started moving again. It was like ... zombie-spider or something.

Soooo ... yeah, dolls don't freak me out so much. The only ones that really creeped me out were some sort of brand I once saw in a toy store. They were maybe the size of, I dunno, a littlefee or slightly bigger, but they were the butt-ugliest dolls I'd EVER seen. They were like ... the spawn of Chuckie or something. I don't even know what they were called and I have never seen them since, but I can't imagine ANY little kid actually keeping something like that in their bedrooms. Well, not unless they collected horror dolls or something. lol

On the other hand, if it's wonky faceprint that creeps you out a larger doll might decrease the risk of that. I've never seen such horribly misprinted eyes as on tiny 1/18 scale Lundby dollhouse dolls.

Interestingly enough, I just read a review of 17'' Gooliope Jellington that suggested her scale might make her a bit too spooky, compared to other MH dolls. I haven't seen Gooliope IRL yet so I don't know if I'd find her creepy (like MH in general, she seems to cute and cartoony for that), but I found it interesting that this seems like a common opinion (or rather, feeling).

When it comes to spiders I almost prefer the ones that are too big to hide in your shoes.

I think the "uncanny valley" has a lot to do with people finding dolls in general, or certain dolls, creepy or unappealing. Myself, I have never, ever liked baby dolls or child dolls. Since my preferred scale is 1/6, it's easy to understand why I'm having such a hard time finding an affordable resin BJD in my preferred scale. Even Isabella, as cute as she is, is a bit more childlike than I would usually like, though she is growing on me.

Reborn dolls *shudder* Keep them away from me. Far, far, far away. They hit my uncanny valley radar HARD.

I've seen Gooliope Jellington and she's just an oversized Monster, her color is that slightly salmon pink a CAM set was made of. If you're already a Monster fan she shouldn't bother you. I'm more to the no side because I don't care for the color that much but wouldn't pass her up if she was on sale.

Being a doll maker it sometimes feel like I'm walking a tight rope over Uncanny Valley. Now that photo software and cameras are recognizing my sculpts as faces I feel I need to do or not do something when I paint to make sure they look doll like. If I reach a state of human looking sculpts I want them to be too perfect like Greek statues.
